Lina Steps Bilum Tote

Bag Number BIL6695

  • The Steps pattern is inspired by a woman's daily journey up the mountain steps. Everyday she comes down the steps to collect water and the things that she needs to sustain her family. She carries them back up to her house on the mountain side, sometimes walking alone and sometimes with friends. They share stories and laugh, bringing joy to a task that would otherwise be hard.
  • The natural fibres are sourced from surrounding vegetation including the Sisal and Pandanus plant, laboriously beaten, twisted into string and then woven. Weavers expertly utilise natural dyes made from plants, ochres and berries to enhance their patterns.
  • All adornments sold separtely.

38cm W x 34cm L x 73cm Strap Length

When you first meet Lina you immediately get pulled in by her energy, she is the most remarkable spirit. For the past 22 years, Lina has made it her mission to connect women living in remote villages along the Sepik River in PNG by training them to become independent and highly-skilled Bilum weavers. In a small motorboat, she travels up and down the Sepik, it’s an arduous four-day journey under the hot sun. At each village, she meets groups of women at the river’s bank to help sell their weavings and this has proved an invaluable life source.
