Steps Bilum Tote by Lina

  • The Steps pattern is inspired by a woman's daily journey up the mountain steps. Everyday she comes down the steps to collect water and the things that she needs to sustain her family. She carries them back up to her house on the mountain side, sometimes walking alone and sometimes with friends. They share stories and laugh, bringing joy to a task that would otherwise be hard.
  • The natural fibres are sourced from surrounding vegetation including the Sisal and Pandanus plant, laboriously beaten, twisted into string and then woven. Weavers expertly utilise natural dyes made from plants, ochres and berries to enhance their patterns.
  • A smaller sized bilum.
  • All adornments sold separtely.

Lina Singu is a remarkable spirit. For the past 22 years, she has made it her mission to connect women living in remote villages along the Sepik River by training them to become independent Bilum weavers. In a small motorboat, she travels up and down the Sepik, it’s an arduous journey under the hot sun. At each village, she is met by groups of women, who greet her at the banks to sell their weaving, and it has proved an invaluable life source.
