Lina Half Diamond Bilum Shopper

Bag Number 6561

  • The Half Diamond is a traditional pattern associated with a young woman’s journey into adulthood. A girl would weave this design when she reaches the age of womanhood.
  • The natural fibres are sourced from surrounding vegetation including the Sisal and Pandanus plant, laboriously beaten, twisted into string and then woven. Weavers expertly utilise natural dyes made from plants, ochres and berries to enhance their patterns.

28cm W x 17cm L x 26cm Strap Length

Lina Singu is a remarkable spirit. For the past 22 years, she has made it her mission to connect women living in remote villages along the Sepik River by training them to become independent Bilum weavers. In a small motorboat, she travels up and down the Sepik, it’s an arduous journey under the hot sun. At each village, she is met by groups of women, who greet her at the banks to sell their weaving, and it has proved an invaluable life source.

Each piece is completely unique and has been created using natural materials. Exposure to harsh sunlight and water may cause damage.

To clean bag, spot clean only with care. Natural dyes will run if machine washed.
